On the Malay peninsula, sustained centuries of trades had drawn traders from China, India and Arab to anchor, settle down, and eventually embrace and interact with the local Malay kingdoms. This distinct era gave birth to the most iconic Malaysian fusion communities, such as the Peranakan (Straits Chinese), Chitty (Straits Indian), and the Kristang (Portuguese-Eurasian) communities.

While early cultural interactions were driven by luxury spices and trade, the ethnic diversification was accelerated by the British colonization of the 1800s and 1900s. Millions of Chinese and Indian immigrants came to Malaysia and worked in the British tin mines or rubber plantations. In the pursuit of survival, economic mobility and generational legacy, many of them had chosen to settle down and form deeply connected communities.
